Polyglycolic Acid PGA
INTRODUCTION TO POLYGLYCOLIC ACID PGA
Polyglycolic Acid PGA is biodegradable polyester polymer. Characteristically, PGA is rather stiff but also of high tenacity. Furthermore, PGA is of a high crystallization degree, it thus not soluble in most organics solvents.
PGA mainly finds application in the medical field as it is absorbable (fully absorbed in 4-6 months according to Middleton & Tipton 1996). Meshs made out of PGA can be used as scaffold, artificial dura or as reinforcement for adhesion barrier whilst PGA yarn (mainly in the form of braids) is for sutures and stents.
