Nettle
PROPERTIES OF NETTLE
The fibers of the stinging nettle have a special characteristic in the fact that they are hollow which means they can accumulate air inside thus creating a natural insulation. To create a cool fiber for Summer the yarn lengths are twisted closing the hollow core and reducing insulation. In Winter with a low twist the hollow fiber remains open maintaining a constant temperature.
Additional to the very high breathability, nettle fiber is also very fine as well as of high tensile strength.
ECOLOGICAL ADVANTAGES OF NETTLE
Apart from the technical advantages, nettle also has its ecological advantages. The nettle originates from Europe and is processed in Europe so that there is hardly any transportation.
Also, production process is very narrow and uses not much energy. No pesticides nor herbicides are being used for growing the raw material and water consumption is minimized so that only very few water is used. Side products created in production are valuesable assets and used in a cradle-to-cradle-way – meaining they get used for further products like in non-wovens and are thus not thrown away.
